Hospitable and Functional
Element façade: a première for Lithuania
The design objectives for the new Municipal Centre in Lithuania’s capital city of Vilnius were clearly laid down right from the start of the project. As a public building, it should not be distinguished by ornamentation, opulence or decoration. Instead, priority was given to quality, durability, functionality, and low-cost operation and maintenance.
For visitor convenience, the original plan for a 27-storey building was replaced with a wider, lower, 20-storey building and two additional 3-storey and 5-storey buildings. The most frequently visited departments are housed in the additional buildings and the lower floors of the main building. The unitised curtain walling system was assembled in ‘cassettes’ in the factory where all the necessary insulating glass and thermal insulation material was fitted, and then mounted on the building site. A première for Lithuania.
