New airport terminal project runs smoothly
Eindhoven Airport opened in 1932 as a recreational airport. During World War II it served as a military base before becoming a civil airport. Over the years the number of passengers has steadily increased, and so has its international importance. Consequently, expansion was necessary. The new terminal has a surface of 13,500 m2 and a capacity of 1.5 million passengers per year.
The architects created a very efficient building constructed mainly of glass, with an aluminium façade that integrates perfectly into the architecture. The self-supporting façade system has a span of over six metres and leans over at 10°. Specially designed profiles make the steel construction which traditionally lies behind the façade unnecessary. The result is aesthetically exceptional and cost-effective. Moreover, further expansion – if needed – is possible within the architectural framework.
