Relaxing in the Ukraine
New health resorts attract tourists
The ancient town of Alushta on the Crimean peninsula is an increasingly popular holiday resort for Russians and Ukrainians, who are attracted to the area for its exceptional hiking, mountaineering and horse-riding opportunities, its many health centres, and of course its attractive beaches. In 2001 the National Reserve Bank of Russia approved an investment of nearly USD 2 million to transform the More (“Sea”) boarding house in Alushta into a high-class health resort complex. Working closely with the European Building Investment Alliance, construction proceeded quickly, and within eighteen months the site was complete. The resort covers an area of 15,000 m2 and is built to European quality standards. It includes villas, swimming pools, a beautiful park, and tree-lined walks to the beach. Architectural highlights include the imaginative use of curved aluminium profiles and glass windows. A similar project also took place in nearby Foros, with the construction of a family recreation centre.
