The evolution of education
University campus gets new landmark building
Throughout its 250-year history, the Robert Gordon University has continually evolved to take into account the changing needs of education. The latest addition is the new Faculty of Health and Social Care. This 7-floor building is typical of the innovative movements that have given the university one of the most architecturally interesting campuses in Scotland.
The building is constructed on a greenfield site on a hill, with the entrance actually being on the fourth level. The glazed roof follows the profile of the sloping site and runs the full length of the building to flood the atrium with natural light. The external façade features local granite with aluminium curtain walling. A brise soleil system is erected outside the curtain walling to provide sun louvres and cleaning access. The lower two floors house a refectory, lecture theatres, laboratories and student accommodation, while each of the upper floors contains a school.
