Realisation of a vision

A startling transformation of an industrial warehouse

Most people would have thought it was a typical – and boring – transport company’s warehouse from the 1980s. But to architects Roos & Ros, it was the ideal starting point for the implementation of their vision for the company’s headquarters. The end result is remarkable. Large aluminium and glass façades now dominate the exterior. Translucent lift doors replace the existing doors. Inside, 3-high stacks of pallets form interior dividing walls and separate the floor area into 12 secluded and quiet work spaces, with storage cupboards in the pallets. Various other functions and management offices are accommodated in the smaller pavilions of the hanger.

A completely white upstairs reception room protrudes through one of the façades and is thus half inside, half outside; access is via a staircase that can be pulled up. Overall, the industrial character of the original building has been kept and even reinforced, with the minimalist design and abstract volumes creating a contrast with the building’s industrial heritage.
