Study in Excellence
New premises create an integrated campus for medical students
The new buildings on the University of Leuven’s Gasthuisberg campus cover 17,000 square metres and include the pharmaceutical faculty, the medical faculty, the biomedical sciences campus, a teaching complex with auditoria and seminar rooms, and a 2-level underground car park. The overall design re-creates a traditional city campus, with university buildings interconnected via a secondary network of streets and small squares. It also encompasses an oasis of green between the teaching campus and the hospital that will function as a peaceful rest area.
Rather than a curtain wall, the architect opted to use strips of windows, each 1.2 metres wide and 3 metres high. Expansion profiles are placed between the windows, which are reinforced with T profiles, to create an attractive and aesthetically pleasing appearance, both from inside and outside. And, of course, an ideal place to study.
